    Biosketch

    Dr. Basler received his undergraduate and MD degrees from University of Missouri. Between these, he completed his PhD in Molecular Biology at the State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y. After a Residency in Urology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, he was recipient of a 3 year American Cancer Society Career Development Award in Urologic Oncology and stayed on as faculty at Washington University from 1990 through 1998. In 1998 he joined the faculty of the UT Health Science Center Division of Urologic Surgery as Associate Professor. After the Division of Urology became the Department of Urology, Dr. Basler was promoted to Professor. Dr. Basler has published numerous scientific papers, book chapters, and has edited a textbook on Urologic Oncology in addition to serving as scientific reviewer for several prominent urologic journals. In 2008, Dr. Basler served as the President of the Texas Urologic Society, representing over 400 member Urologists. He currently serves as Program Director for UT Health San Antonio Department of Urology.

    Clinical

    Dr. Basler's primary expertise is the diagnosis and treatment of urologic malignancies including tumors of the prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and male genitalia. He serves as primary consultant in the GU Tumor Clinic at the South Texas Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital. Other expertise includes Endourologic procedures, stone management, treatment of Peyronnie's disease and general urology.

    Research

    Dr. Basler is the Principal Investigator of several Southwest Oncology Clinical Trials open at the UT Health Science Center and STVAHCS campuses and serves on the national coordinating committee for a large VA Cooperative Trial in treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
