Biosketch

Dr. Javier Hernandez earned his B.S. (Concentration in Chemistry) from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY and his M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC. He completed his Urology Residency training at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium – SAUSHEC – (Brooke Army Medical Center, Wilford Hall Medical Center) in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Hernandez then went on to complete a Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During his Fellowship training, Dr. Hernandez also completed a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Hernandez is Board Certified by the American Board of Urology. In 2011, Dr. Hernandez retired after 20 years of dedicated service in the United States Army. Dr. Hernandez deployed to Iraq in 2010 where he served our nation as Urology Theater Consultant for U.S. forces deployed to the Iraq Theater of Operations. Dr. Hernandez currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Health San Antonio. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Hernandez is a member of the American Urological Association, Society of Urologic Oncology, and the Society of Government Service Urologists.

Clinical

Dr. Hernandez has an interest in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of urologic malignancies including tumors of the kidney, bladder, prostate, testis and male genitalia. He has particular expertise in the surgical management of advanced testicular cancer. He receives referrals from all over South Texas for the management of patients in need of retroperitoneal lymph node dissections (RPLNDs). With the current number of RPLNDs performed by Dr. Hernandez over the past few years, the UT Health San Antonio Department of Urology has now been placed on the map as a high volume center for this procedure. His clinical practice also involves the treatment of a large number of patients with kidney cancer by laparoscopic or open surgical approaches. Dr. Hernandez performs surgery at University Hospital.

Research

Dr. Hernandez is actively involved in various research endeavors on the early detection of prostate cancer. He was a contributing member of the American Urological Association Guidelines Panel on Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer (2004 – 2007) and has over 40 peer-reviewed publications.
